Peer support is a key component in helping people with diabetes lead healthy lives. Peer support complements and extends primary care to help people follow management plans in daily life, stay motivated and cope with the stressors chronic disease so often provides, and stay connected to their health care providers to get the care they need.
More people and organizations need to understand the important role and benefits of peer support in diabetes care. We can promote the concept of peer support, communicate its value to others, and create a path toward action.
